chapter six: another bet

Two days later, around 8AM, Amanda went into Nick's room, and of course he was sleeping. Amanda sighed and didn't even waste her time yelling. Nick had himself tangled up in a blanket and there was a small portion of it sticking out over the edge of the bed. Amanda grabbed it and yanked on it as hard as she could sending poor Nick rolling off the other side of the bed. He jumped to his feet looking rather confused. "What? What?! Did we just have an earthquake?!" he asked frantic and confused.

Amanda rolled her eyes and said, "No, stupid. I threw you out of bed. You're supposed to be in the studio in 30 minutes. I don't want to get blamed for you being late again. Although I don't know why I get yelled at in the first place… I'm not your keeper. You're older than me and you should be able to take care of yourself by now.

Nick rolled his eyes and said, "Yes, Mama."

"Don't call me that and I'm not your Mama thank God. We went over this," said Amanda.

"I know, I just like annoying you," said Nick.

"That's apparent, thank you," said Amanda, "Now hurry up." Nick mumbled something under his breath and took off his shirt. Amanda blushed and said, "Dude, don't strip in front of me."

"Get out of my room!!" said Nick, throwing his shirt at Amanda.

Amanda threw the shirt off of her and looked disgusted. "Okay, okay, I'm going!" said Amanda, leaving the room.

Nick got ready and met Amanda downstairs about fifteen minutes later. She drove him down to the studio and Nick was one minute late, but Kevin let him off the hook this time. "Frack, we need to get you an alarm clock," said Brian.

"What for? The only way it would work is if I threw it at his head," said Amanda. Nick flinched at the thought.

"You must be so pleasant in the morning," said AJ.

"I guess you'll never know, will you?" asked Amanda.

"…You don't want to know," said Nick.

"…Hey Nick, what does she sleep in?" asked AJ, he smirked and then added, "…if anything at all."

Nick blushed and Amanda went up to smack AJ but he ran into the sound proof booth. He then locked himself in and then stuck his tongue out at everyone through the window. The only problem was he forgot Kevin was still in the booth. Kevin silently grabbed AJ by the back of his collar, opened the door and tossed him out. The others started laughing as AJ landed at Amanda's feet. She smirked and AJ froze. She went to grab him but he ran out of the room. "AJ, get back here!" said Kevin.

"She's gonna hurt me!" called AJ, from outside of the room.

Amanda rolled her eyes. "I'll leave you alone, just get back to work. I have to go pick up Emma anyways," said Amanda.

"You promise…?" asked AJ.

"Let me rephrase, if you don't get back in here, I'm coming out there," said Amanda.

"Hehe, he's scared of a girl," snickered Brian. Amanda gave him a look and he gradually stopped laughing. "Okay, so he has a point."

AJ cautiously came back in and kept his distance from Amanda. She rolled her eyes and left to pick up Emma.

"Does someone want to tell her she's a girl someday?" asked Brian.

"I tried… I'm not trying again," said Nick.

"She's not that bad, you guys," said Howie. The younger three instantly gave him a look.

"You've never been hit by her," said AJ.

"Everytime she hits you three, you've deserved it," said Howie.

Their jaws dropped. "We did not!" they all whined in unison.

"You know, I would like to get some recording done today…" said Kevin, getting rather impatient. They all rushed into the booth and they started recording. About an hour later, Amanda returned with Emma. They watched the boys concentrating pretty hard.

"Now why can't they always be this serious?" asked Amanda.

"Because they wouldn't be as cute as they are then," said Emma.

"Well they aren't cute now to begin with," said Amanda.

"Uh huh, sure," said Emma.

"I'm serious," said Amanda.

"Right~" said Emma.

Amanda opened her mouth to reply once more but the boys stepped out of the booth. "Hey girls," said Kevin.

"Hey Kevin, guys," said Emma.

Nick smiled and kissed Emma on the cheek, "Hey, Em."

"Hey Nicky," she replied.

Amanda got a disgusted look on her face. Brian then came up to Amanda and copied Nick. He kissed Amanda on the cheek and said, "Hey, Mama."

Amanda's jaw dropped in shock and she quickly wiped off her cheek. "OMG get off of me!!" said Amanda, frantically cleansing her cheek from any Bri germs. The others started cracking up. Even Kevin cracked a little smile. "Ew!!" said Amanda, "that was digusting…"

"Amanda, you got a kiss on the cheek from Brian Littrell… like that's a bad thing," said Emma.

Amanda continued to go on and shuddered. "Ugh, now I have cooties," she mumbled.

"…How old are you again?" asked Nick.

"Just shut up," said Amanda.

Emma sighed and shook her head. "Only you, Amanda."

"Alright guys, we got a lot more work to do today. Back to work. You ladies are welcome to stay," said Kevin, going back into the booth.

"Don't give Kevin a hard time," cautioned Amanda, as the others headed back into the booth.

Brian, AJ, and Nick all stuck their heads out of the doorway and smiled and said in unison, "We won't." They then got into the booth and they got back to work.

"Uh huh… yeah right," said Amanda.

The girls sat and watched the boys record for about fifteen minutes and then Emma asked, "So… what's up with you and AJ?" She couldn't help but add a smirk.

Amanda froze and looked over at her. "What do you mean…?"

"You two were pretty close at Disneyland," said Emma.

Amanda rolled her eyes and said, "I was doing all of that because I lost a bet, remember?"

Emma kept her smirk on her face and added, "Hmm, I don't know… it seemed pretty serious to me."

Amanda blushed and mumbled, "Shut up…"

"What's this I see…? Are you blushing?" continued Emma.

"Em… shut up," said Amanda.

Emma laughed and said, "Okay, okay, I'll stop."

Amanda mumbled something to herself and then said, 'Thank you…"

"…But you never answered my question," she said, smirking.

"NOTHING," said Amanda, getting more and more annoyed.

"Okay, okay," laughed Emma.

They sat there watching the boys singing, and getting yelled at by Kevin for about an hour now. Not to mention, while Kevin was talking, Brian and AJ would look over at them through the window and make weird faces. Emma and Amanda got bored, and decided they'd look around the place. They went into the hallway and there was some equipment lying around and Amanda accidently knocked something over, creating a huge crash. The two girls ran into one of the empty studios and hid.

"Hey, did you bring your boombox?" asked Emma.

"Yeah, it's in the car. I'll go get it," said Amanda. She went out to her car and brought in her boombox and her 250 cd carrier filled with cds. She hooked up the boombox and Emma went through the cds.

"Let's see..." she said, looking through the cds.

Amanda raised an eyebrow and said, "So they're your cds now?"

"Yep," said Emma, sticking out her tongue. She then picked out Millennium, and put it in one of the cd slots. She then picked out the first International cd and Backstreet's Back in the other two slots, filling it up.

"...They're in the other room singing, yet you put them in. There are 247 other cds in there, you know," said Amanda.

"Yeah, well, like you can talk. You have all your BSB cds up front... six pages full," said Emma.

"That's...just...'cause they're in alphabetical order," said Amanda, in her own defense.

"Uh huh..." said Emma, flipping through a few more pages, "since when does "M" come right after "B" and before "C"?"

Amanda mumbled and said, "Just shut up." Emma smiled at her victory and pushed random. The girls were bored enough to start dancing. They got to the song "I wanna be with you" and Amanda turned it up.

"Hey, I bet I can do more of the choreography to this song than you," said Emma.

Amanda raised her eyebrow and asked, "You bet?" Emma nodded. Amanda came over Emma's place the night before and they were watching the boys' "Live in Concert" video, which featured their concert in Germany. "You are not going to beat me."

"So you're gonna take up the bet?" asked Emma.

"Bet nothing. I'm not going to lose," said Amanda.

"You're scared," said Emma.

"No, I'm not!" said Amanda.

"Then we'll bet on it. What do you have to lose if you're not going to lose?" asked Emma.

"Fine, fine. What are the terms of the bet this time?" asked Amanda.

Emma thought for a second. "Well let's see... for you and AJ's first date..." started Emma.

"...What?! What the hell are you talking about?!" said Amanda, rather panicked.

"Okay, okay, WHEN you and AJ have your first date, you have to dress up. I mean a nice gown, hair done, and makeup," said Emma.

"...I'm not losing," said Amanda.

"And glitter too. Not only that, I get to pick everything out...and dress you up," said Emma.

"I'm NOT losing," said Amanda, convincing herself as well.

"...Oh yeah, one last thing... You have to kiss Nick on the cheek," said Emma.

If Amanda was drinking anything, it would have been all of the place. "WHAT?!"

"What are you so worried about if you're so sure you're gonna win?" asked Emma.

"Okay, fine. Are you done with your little plan of evil?" asked Amanda.

"Oh yeah and..." Emma started.

"OK you're DONE. It's my turn now," said Amanda.

"Ooh, I'm scared," mocked Emma.

"You should be," said Amanda. She thought for a second and then a smirk appeared on her face.

"What...?" asked Emma.

"If I win, which I will, you cannot go shopping to the mall for a week," she said. Emma raised an eyebrow. "Also," she continued, "you cannot talk for one whole day." Emma's jaw dropped. "Finally, you can't kiss Nick, for hmmm three days."

"I won't have to worry about it because I'm not going to lose," said Emma.

"We'll see," said Amanda.

"Okay, so rewind the song already and we'll see who wins," said Emma. Amanda nodded and they started dancing to the song. About a minute into the song, AJ and Brian passed by and saw them in the room and quietly came in.

They watched the girls quietly until Amanda made a mistake in the choreography toward the end of the song and AJ said, "Hey, you messed up."

The two girls jumped and turned bright red. Amanda quickly paused the song and they tried to collect their thoughts. The guys saw their reactions and started laughing. The girls turned even redder.

"…We weren't that bad wer… Amanda you messed up," said Emma, suddenly forgetting her embarrassment and smiling.

Amanda's eyes widened. "I did not!! They messed me up!!" said Amanda.

"You messed up before they even said anything! You lost! I won again so HA," said Emma, just a bit happy about her victory once again.

Amanda made a weird angry noise and stomped her feet. "We missed something again, huh?" asked Brian.

"It's nothing much. We just had a little bet, who could do more of the choreography of this song… dang Amanda, this is your favorite song too," said Emma, rubbing it in.

"Shut up…" said Amanda, through her teeth, now having her arms crossed.

"…And you're a dancer too," added AJ. Brian elbowed him to be quiet considering Amanda was now giving them both a look of death.

"You guys were doing really good though, a lot better than Frick and Frack… hey do you wanna replace them?" asked AJ.

"Very funny, AJ," said Brian. Amanda finally managed to laugh and her face started turning back to it's normal color.

"I thought it was, but anyways. So, what were the terms of the bet?" asked AJ.

Amanda got wide-eyed again and looked at Emma. "That's a secret," said Emma. Amanda let out a sigh of relief.

"Awww, come on, you can tell us," said Brian.

Amanda got all wide-eyed again and gave Emma another look. "Well…" said Emma. Amanda frantically shook her head. "Let's see…" said Emma, just to keep Amanda's reaction going.

"Aww, come on, please?" asked AJ, adding a pout.

"…You're pouting, how can I resist?" asked Emma. Amanda looked for something to throw and Emma laughed and said, "No, it's a secret, sorry."

"Aww, you're no fun," said Brian.

"You might see soon enough. So are you guys done?" asked Emma.

"Yeah, for now at least. Kevin's giving us an hour break. Nick wanted us to come by and tell you he's waiting in the other studio. He would have come himself but Kevin had to have a talk with him," said Brian.

"Oh, okay, I'll see you guys later then," said Emma. She looked right at Amanda, gave her one last victory smile and walked out of the room. Amanda mumbled obscenities to herself.

"I'm gonna go get something to eat, Bone, you comin'?" asked Brian.

"Yeah. Amanda, do you want something to eat?" asked AJ.

Amanda let out a sigh and shook her head. "No, I'm not hungry. You guys go ahead. I have to practice some anyways," said Amanda.

"Alright, see you a little later," said Brian, as he and AJ left.

Amanda went up to her boombox and put Millennium on. She went through some of the songs and the dance routines that went with it. About 40 minutes later, AJ came by, and knocked this time. "Come in," she said.

AJ came in and closed the door. "Mind if I watch?" he asked.

The truth was without a doubt, she did mind because he made her nervous, but she said, "No, that's fine." She went back to her routine and tried her absolute best not to mess up. AJ sat down and actually watched quietly. Amanda made a few mistakes because she was concentrating more on not paying attention to AJ rather than the dancing but she made it through alright. About 10 minutes later, she stopped and put "Everytime I Close My Eyes" in and sat down and grabbed a water bottle.

"Good job…" he said. He listened to the song for a second and said, "Hey… I know this song."

Amanda rolled her eyes and said, "Maybe it's because you sing it."

"I know, I know, I'm just kidding," said AJ.

"This is one of your best songs. You guys should have sang it live sometime," said Amanda, taking a sip of her water.

"You like this song?" asked AJ.

Amanda nodded and said, "I don't even know why, but I really like it. It was one of my first favorite songs from you guys. I don't know, maybe I just like sad love songs." She continued drinking her water.

"I see…" said AJ. They sat there in silence for a few minutes then AJ softly started to sing, "Everytime I close my eyes… I see your face and I wonder." Amanda froze but didn't say anything. She just listened to him. He then started from the beginning and sang through the whole song live. After he was done, he was a little red, wondering if he sang it alright or not.

Amanda actually smiled and clapped. "That was really nice. Maybe they should just give you that song as a solo… I liked you singing Brian's parts more than him singing them," she said sincerely.

AJ was sort of shocked and turned red, "Really? You liked it?" he asked. Amanda nodded. "Thanks…"

"No problem," said Amanda, finishing off her water.

"Hey Amanda…" said AJ.

"Yeah?" she asked.

"Would you like to…" he tried to ask but he was cut off by Brian barging into the room making them both jump.

"What's up?" asked Brian.

AJ mumbled something under his breath and said, "Nothing…"

"Brian… try knocking sometime, rather than scaring the crap out of people," said Amanda.

"Aww, it's more fun that way though. Anyways, AJ, we gotta get back to the studio. Kevin's looking for us," said Brian.

AJ sighed and stood up and said, "Alright, I'll be right there." Brian left the room and AJ said, "I'll see you later."

Amanda nodded and said, "Don't get killed by Kevin. Oh yeah, what did you want to ask me before Brian rudely interrupted?"

AJ turned red again and said, "It's…nothing. It's not important, I'll see you later." He walked out of the room and headed back to the other studio. Amanda just shrugged and started gathering all of her stuff.

Finally, by around 7PM, they finished recording for the day and all the boys were exhausted. Nick was a little whiny and complaining about a headache. He sat down on one of the chairs and was pouting and Emma sat down next to him. "Awww, poor baby," she said.

Amanda rolled her eyes and said, "Give me a break. You always whine anyways."

Nick actually got a little mad and said, "Yeah, well you weren't in there all day recording, so just shut up." Someone gasped and everyone just froze, now fearing for Nick's life. He was too mad to take it back. Amanda was about to yell at Nick when Emma gave her a look. Amanda took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh. She then walked up to Nick and stood in front of him. Nick didn't budge and his facial expression didn't change at all. The other four guys were more scared for him than he was himself.

Amanda then said, "You're right, I'm sorry, Sque…Nick. I shouldn't have yelled at you and I'm sorry you have a headache. You guys did a really good job today, including you." She then leaned over and kissed Nick on the cheek. Absolute silence hit the room. She blushed and backed away a few steps. Nick's jaw dropped and he blushed. Emma just smiled while the other four couldn't believe what just happened. Nick looked rather confused.

"…Did you just kiss me on the cheek?" he asked.

Amanda started turning redder and said, "Yeah… it was part of the apology."

"Oh… okay…?" he said, still in shock and very confused. The other four were still trying to figure out what just happened.

Brian elbowed AJ and whispered, "Did she just kiss him on the cheek?!" AJ nodded, still staring at Amanda in disbelief.

"Maybe I should tell her to shut up when she's mean to me…" whispered AJ.

"…I wouldn't try, AJ," said Howie.

Nick just kept looking absolutely confused. Emma couldn't help but laugh and asked, "Is your headache any better, sweetie?"

"…Huh? Headache…oh yeah… hey, it's gone," said Nick. It then went back to silence.

"…Would you guys get over it already!! Jeez, it's no big deal!!" said Amanda.

"Um, uh… Anyways, we only have a few more days until we head off to Europe. You guys better start getting packed tonight," said Kevin, finally breaking the silence.

The others just nodded. Once they finally got over the shock, everyone headed home. Amanda was silent on the way home. She dropped Emma off at her relatives' place. Emma got out and knocked on Amanda's window. She rolled it down and Emma said, "See you tomorrow. We should start planning everything out." She added an innocent smile.

Amanda mumbled and said, "GOOD NIGHT." Emma just laughed and Nick got out and walked her to the house. He kissed her on the cheek and told her good night and came back to the car and got in. He closed the door and Amanda pulled out of the driveway and headed back to Nick's house. They sort of felt awkward around each other and then, Amanda finally said, "I'm sorry."

Nick looked up at her looking really confused again and said, "Huh?"

"…I'm sorry for embarrassing you back there," said Amanda.

"Huh? You didn't embarrass me, you just surprised everyone, that's all," said Nick.

"But I'm sure I'm the last person you wanted a kiss from…" said Amanda.

"It's not…that, you just…never did that before. It was actually kind of nice," said Nick. Amanda was now bright red and did her best to concentrate on the road. "…It's not happening again, is it?"

"…Probably not. You've got Emma to kiss you, I'm sure that's enough," said Amanda.

"True… but I have to admit it was a nice change from being yelled at all the time," said Nick.

Amanda managed to smile and said, "…I'm sorry."

"…Are you sure you're feeling okay?" asked Nick.

"Would you just shut up, or I might just have to yell at you again," said Amanda.

"Could I have the kiss instead?" asked Nick.

Amanda rolled her eyes and shook her head but managed to smile. Nick laughed a little and they continued to head home.
